Welcome

Founded in 2003, the Liberty Community Chorus is a mixed, SATB choir that shares a rich and diverse musical repertoire with the Kansas City community.

A non auditioned group founded in 2003, the Liberty Community Chorus offers a unique opportunity for singers aged 16 and up to continue to enjoy and learn the art of choral music while sharing a diverse repertoire with the audience. In addition to their regular concert season the Chorus has appeared as guest artists at the Jewish Community Center, Northwest Missouri State University, as well as the Liberty Fall Festival and with the Liberty Symphony.

The fall season will consist of three performances. The first will be a mini concert on September 27 for our friends and patrons at our annual fundraising gala. Then, on October 29, we celebrate the African-American Spiritual with "Every Time I Feel The Spirit" featuring "The Gospel Mass" by Missouri's own Robert Ray as well as works arranged by William Dawson and Larry Fleming. We close out the fall season on December 2nd with "A Christmas Carol Sing A Long" featuring seasonal favorites both secular and sacred. Presented with a special guest choir, we hope this free will offering event will bring the whole community together to sing and celebrate the season.

Singers

The Chorus warmly welcomes new singers and does not require an audition. Because the organization strives to attain the highest possible level of excellence in performance its members are expected to diligently attend rehearsals and model a professional attitude for other singers.

Membership

The Chorus is open to singers who are at least 16 years old. Though no auditions are currently required, new singers should have some music reading skills. The attendance policy for rehearsals and concerts will be established before the first rehearsal.

Singer Fees

Singer fees are used to help pay for music, programs, and advertising as well as honorariums for the director and accompanist. All fees are tax deductible.

The fee for adults is $45 per season (Fall and Spring) for Chorus members. Discounted fees are available if dues are paid for both seasons at once.

The fee for full-time high school and college students is $10 per season.

Scholarships are available for those in financial need, on a case-by-case basis, from the Board of Directors. A scholarship form is available from the director or chorus officers.

Singer fees are due at the first rehearsal of each season. Please make checks payable to Liberty Community Chorus.

Music

Kristen Uhlman, the chorus' librarian, has the daunting task of organizing our music, and she needs your help. Some of our music is borrowed from schools and churches so please mark your scores with a pencil and treat it gently. Each singer will receive a music packet at the beginning of each season. Each singer will also receive a number for the music. When you get the music in the manila envelope, please compare the scores with the detailed repertoire list that also is included. Please use this envelope to hand in your music immediately after our concert.

The singer is responsible for the cost of replacing any music that is not returned.

Rehearsal Information

Attendance Policy

Chorus members are expected to attend rehearsals regularly. Ensembles can only perform at their best when the group's membership has come together as a cohesive unit for as many rehearsals as possible. Please review the rehearsal schedule carefully before committing to the Liberty Community Chorus. Certainly emergencies and family needs will, and should, take precedence over our rehearsals. However, if a singer has ongoing attendance problems, the director has the discretion to dismiss that member from the chorus.

Chorus members who know they will miss a rehearsal should contact Director Bryan Taylor before the rehearsal at bryansings@gmail.com. Also, all singers are encouraged to contact the director regarding chorus information and musical questions.

Rehearsal Location

The Chorus will hold rehearsals at the NEW building for Liberty United Methodist Church at the Rush Creek Campus: 100 Rush Creak Parkway. For directions click here

Information and Group Contact

If the director must cancel a rehearsal because of inclement weather or other unforeseen event our first form of communication will be through e-mail or phone contact with singers who do not use e-mail.

About the Liberty Community Chorus

The Liberty Community Chorus was founded in 2003 to foster the singing talents of a mixed (SATB) choir and share the art of choral music with the Kansas City community through the pursuit of choral excellence in the rehearsal and performance of enriching and diverse music.

The Chorus is open to all singers 16 years of age and older and currently consists of 50 - 60 non auditioned volunteer singers from throughout the Kansas City area. These members commit from 2 to 5 hours of their time per week to rehearse and prepare for each concert.

Since the inaugural performance of the Chorus, it has expanded to two seasons a year with concerts in both the fall and spring. Prior performances have included both Requiem and Gloria by John Rutter for Chorus and Orchestra, the Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps by Donald McCullough, as well as music drawn from a variety of cultures and languages to include Chinese, Slovak, German, Russian, Hebrew and the British Isles. Additionally the Chorus has performed the music of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Bernstein as guest artists with the Liberty Symphony as well as appearing by invitation at the Liberty Heritage Festival, the Jewish Community Center's Recognition Banquet and at Northwest Missouri State University. The spring 2010 program "An American Tapestry" focuses exclusively on works by American Composers such as Aaron Copeland, Moses Hogan, Eric Whittaker and Kansas City's own Mark Hayes.

The Chorus is under the direction of Bryan Taylor who has a Music Education degree from William Jewell College and a Master's in Choral Conducting from the UMKC Conservatory of Music. He has sung with the Kansas City Chorale since 1992. In addition he has performed numerous times with the Robert Shaw Chorale Workshop held at Carnegie Hall. Taylor taught choral music at Kearney High School for 15 years and currently is the Director of Music at Liberty United Methodist Church. In 2007, following several years as Music, Repertoire & Standards Chair for the Missouri Choral Directors Association, he assumed the same position for the Southwest Division of the American Choral Directors Association.

In 2006, the Liberty Community Chorus was designated a 501( c) (3) tax-exempt, charitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service. The activities of the Chorus are funded through member dues, ticket sales and the generous support of our donors and patrons. Scholarship assistance is available for qualified, financially challenged singers. Administrative and operational functions are governed by Chorus Bylaws and overseen by an 11 member Board of Directors who serve on a volunteer basis.
