Singer Spotlight

Larry Harris

1. When did you join the LCC? My wife and I joined the LCC for the opening two years, beginning in 2003. We dropped out due to work and other time commitments. When I mostly retired in 2013, I joined again. 2. Where did you grow up? Born in Morristown, Tennessee, we also lived in North Carolina and Texas before moving to Winter Haven, Florida. From 5th grade through college at Florida State, that was home. 3. Tell us about your family – are you married, single, any children? My wonderful, patient wife is Cindy, and we have three grown daughters. Natalie is an RN working in Leavenworth, KS. Kelly (married to Shawn) is a middle school vocal music teacher for Park Hill District. And Stacey (married to Scott) is an account compliance officer with Health Equity in Washington state. Kelly and Shawn gave us two amazing granddaughters, Madison and Maleah, and we are glad they are in the area. 4. What is (or was) your professional career? My bachelor’s degree in music education from the FSU School of Music helped me with one year of employment as a junior high vocal music teacher. Ugh! Church music and choral directing became my avocation for 25 years. My career employment, which brought me to Kansas City in 1988, was with the Lipton Foods Company, part of Unilever, for whom I was a manufacturer’s representative. I have since held other business development positions. 5. Tell us about your choral experiences. What choirs have you sung with? Are you currently singing with other choirs? I sang in church and school choirs whenever they were available. The University Singers at FSU was a great experience. There was a Mendelssohn Society Chorus in St. Louis with which I sang and shared directing responsibilities. And in those same years Cindy and I sang with the St. Charles Community Chorus. These days I try to provide the church choir experience through my leadership of the Christian Community Chorus. 6. Do you play any instruments? Not that I would admit! I managed to get through class piano at FSU. 7. Besides choral music, what other styles of music do you enjoy? I have always been a big Elvis fan. And I loved John Gary. I sang an awful lot of folk music during the 60’s. I can get down with Aretha, Tom Jones, or Mac Davis. Broadway songs are high on my list. And yes, I love many operatic arias. Celtic, Irish Tenor music, bring it on! 8. What has been your favorite or most memorable LCC concert or song? Loch Lomond - Liam, sing it for me one more time! Jessye Norman’s song “This Christmastide” - wonderful! Homeland - Wow! But my favorite concert list was perhaps the American and Irish Folk Songs. And keep the patriotic numbers coming!

9. What are your hobbies or interests other than singing?

The Gladstone Rotary Club consumes some of my time. I work a lot in my yard and flower beds. And I read a lot. My priorities are usually inspirational authors, including books about American history. I recommend the Michael Medved books. And if you have never read “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass an American Slave” from 1845, please make time for that.

10. What is your favorite food or dessert?

Mediterranean vegetables are delicious, but getting harder to find premixed. I enjoy so many foods, this is an impossible question! I am supposed to be on the Mediterranean diet, but who doesn’t like pizza, popcorn, and the pause that refreshes? Zucchini brownies, anyone?

11. Do you have any pets? What kind and how many?

Done with pets. Owned horses once. Loved to ride! Can’t park the rascals.

12. If you could have dinner with your favorite musician, singer, composer from any time period, who would be?

I would probably have the most questions for Georg F. Handel, and I love his oratorios. But I would have really enjoyed a dinner with Victor Borge.
